I don’t normally write about non-life-altering stuff, but I have to do this.
Today I went with the love of my life to see the last installment of the Ring Cycle by Wagner, called Gotterdammerung as it was shared via live stream in HD from the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. For those who think opera isn’t cool or anything like that, they need to see the stuff this opera house puts out. It’s amazing, simply amazing. They use technology for their sets, and have the best operatic talent you can imagine. The whole thing was awe inspiring. If you can catch it on the encore (if they’re doing one) I would strongly recommend it. Even if you haven’t seen the previous three sets of it (Das Reingold, Da Valkyrie, and Siegfried) it’s still worth it. There is an exposition of the story line at the very beginning so you don’t have to worry about catching up and they give you a story sheet at most places you can go to in order to know what’s going on. It’s usually at regular movie theatres in most large cities/towns. You can find listings for this and other wonderful opera performances at metopera.org/HD. I’m going to go to the one on April 14th for La Traviata.
